Description

The Cindys - The Cindys

Like all classic songwriting, The Cindys began as an exercise in simplicity. Jack Ogborne had spent years producing challenging, uncompromising music under the moniker of Bingo Fury, a project that had long attracted praise for its stark poeticism and experimental ambitions. With plaudits from The Guardian, The Quietus, and CLUNK, not to mention regular support from BBC 6Music, the band had from strength to strength, and by all appearances, Ogborne’s songwriting was only flourishing.

However, for Ogborne, these efforts to push the envelope had gradually ceased to be compelling. Returning to his old love of 80s indie, from C86 to Flying Nun, he found himself drawn to the directness, the lucidity of straightforward hooks and melodies. The decision was thus made to track the majority of ‘The Cindys’ to 8-track cassette, most of the recording taking place in the basement of The Cornish Bank in Falmouth. Huddled into the damp and claustrophobic space with producer Sam Stacpoole, Ogborne sought to recreate the close, collective feel of a band returning to their roots, becoming raw and direct without losing the intricacy of the tracks' arrangements.
